long-winded movie review - karate kid remake

you and i both had a crush on the first karate kid.
don't even try to deny it.

but this karate kid remake proves one thing:
jaden smith has a future ahead of him

i will be honest, initially, this was one of those,
"oh, ok dear, lets go see a movie that you want to see"
moments,

but i absolutely enjoyed it and would own this.
(i might even go as far to say i like it better than the original...
but that may or may not be blasphemous...)

best features:

* jackie chan character is priceless -
so different from some of the dumbed down guy movies he's played in.
this guy has depth - great performance
and the chemistry between him and the kid is fun to watch.

* music - from the beginning i was dancin -
the credits feature a song jaden wrote himself.
that just makes me smile.

* parallels to previous karate kid. look for em.
some are subtle,
but because i was raised by men, i caught em.

* end credits feature very cool fotos of the production
with jada pinkett and will hangin out the whole time.
they were the producers of the film.

watch your tail end for this jaden kid -
he's coming on up.

miss you already...

this weekend i was in utah.

i played with these chicas while my sister-in-law
[sort of] patiently waits for baby parker to kindly step out of her body...

and we got to see jace play some hardcore soccer...

fotos by meg

then we heard cam's first recording.
she will most likely be a rock star....

I Am T-Pain by Smule: Only on iPhone

Listen to Cameron's latest recording:

nusafed?

[we were rolling, she is so good...]

miss you already!
thanks for letting me stay and play

Wednesday, July 22, 2009

answer:

thanks for playing- you were oh so close....

all four of these words were part of a little contest:

4 female artists sat arguing over who was the best female artist,
and just before it got out of hand,
they thought of this idea...

they each drew a word out of a hat
and each artist had to write (or get their writers to write)
a song.

the rules:
  • it must be repetitive to near bloody q-tip level,
  • must use the word 90% of the song,
  • the song must convey an obscure message that only the artist can understand...

...and then we will see who really is the best female artist...

so far, this techno one-word song phenomenon still belongs to lady gaga,
the unfortunately named, lyrically challenged one.

if you'll notice, big green tractor is not too far behind though...
must be catching on...

where in the hockey sticks is music going these days!!

the way you make me feel

i'd like to think that if mj makes it to heaven

that he would be the cute little black kid whose body was overtaken by an alien.

hey michael sean and lindsee jo,

do you remember the time we used to scream over the bimonthly

mj only dance parties?

i do.

and i think, along with half the world yesterday, i had an mj only party in my car all day.
which is fabulous in the new sound system.
(ironically, i have been listening to him all week anyway... but anyway...)

i dressed as him for "hero day" in high school...

musically. he was my musical/choreographical hero.

last night, as we drove home, we heard about 7 cars also Jamming to the classics,

easing down the road... and wondered...

how many around the world yesterday were keepin the faith?

i have the music videos ready to watch, and i may even need to go rent the wiz...

can't stop till you get enough.

oh yeah- farrah fawcett and ed mcmann died too.

but no one can play their music....

just wonder who gets the money now....

Time Out...

this is why i don't like listening to the radio.
well, today i tried again...

this is the song that happened.
i will notate my thoughts:

Poker Face
by
Lady GaGa
hold it there.
who calls themselves "gaga"?
and "Lady Gaga" as if she is the honorable Gaga....?

Songwriters: Germanotta, Stefani; Khayat, Nadir
(note the plural. it took four 1-namers to come up with this crap)

I won't tell you that I love you
Kiss or hug you
Cause I'm bluffin'
with my muffin (your muffin?)
I'm not lying
I'm just stunnin'
with my love-glue-gunning (what?)
Just like a chick in the casino
Take your bank before I pay you out
I promise this, promise this
Check this hand cause I'm marvelous
(what just happened here?
maybe i don't need to know...)

Can't read my,
Can't read my
No he can't read my poker face
(She's got to love nobody)
Can't read my
Can't read my
No he can't read my poker face
(She's got to love nobody)
really? that. just. happened.
someone wrote a song called, "poker face"
future offspring, hold on tight.

i know i know.
i've been mia for a while.
i promise i have some pictures and updates
coming tomorrow.
we are getting internet soon though
and then i will be back in biz.

...me & the gang...

pardon the quick side note:

dear jessica [used-to-be-married-to-that-one-dude-but-now-you're-not] simpson,

you look trashy, sound trashy, and i don't believe you are as close to dolly parton as you think you think you are.

in fact, your trite, obnoxious longing to be loved by your unadoring fans you should probably just take back to malibu where your 92' not-all-too-unbearable pop music lives.

the only thing we could say was "hey, she still has an amazing set of legs!"

rascal flatts, on the other hand....
not only blew us away,

and humbly showed their love of music,

but they also sound fantastic live,

and the light show is almost just as fun,
making for sweet fotos...

exhibit a:
he said hi to this girl, and then discovered she wrote a song...
she's friggen 10.
he got her up there and made her sing it!
the crowd had to chant "tay—lor, tay—lor" to get her in,
but eventually she wailed that little tone-deaf voice...
inspirational.
after the guitarist/drums came in to back her up,
they finished a chorus, but she kept going!
rad.

thanks, topher, for the best v-day present ever...

i am so glad you get into music the way i do.

it's going to make life a lot easier on us both...

Monday, March 9, 2009

hey boys...

be patient.
i will be there soon.
like 3 days.

but i am bringing my lover,
so don’t be tryin to get all fresh again...

ooh. can't wait.

new musical obsessions for your weekend perusal

i love that i have some very musically trained friends
who can keep me up on my eclectic musical gems.

(all of these i have stumbled upon within the last year)

let me know which ones you like:

hazy — rosi galan (feat. william fitzsimmons)

falling Slowly — glen hansard & marketa irglova
(from the movie "Once" & won the academy award last year)

herbie hancock (jazz piano master) feat. christina aguilera.
aside from her fancy mic-work... this chick is on point.
and looks stunning, i might add...

check out herbie's others...
the john mayer one is serious fun.

speaking of, so is this:

and since we are on an upbeat kick:
some of you might like one
i happened upon last year: eric hutchinson.
love this guy too.

this little music/clip montage of this Best Picture nominee (among 10 oscar nominations):

enjoy! and have a fantabulous weekend!

i love people who love their jobs

metro driver/voice dude
-
going on the blue toward franconia springfield he says, "fran-cónia sprangfeeyuld...." in this almost southern drawl... if it is real, that's awesome. but i like to believe that it is a very happy black man that loves doing what he does and so he makes it fun sometimes...

starbucks guy -
this guy is like an auctioneer. he loves that he knows all the names of all the millions of mixes... "tall, grande daily drip with three shots of whatever...mochachino frappe with hazelnut..." as every person grabs their morning shot of death he adds "have a great day" with a grin...
that's the kicker...

concierge -
charles. he is usually the one at the desk when i get in. he will do anything you need and smile and love doin it. no really, i wonder if he goes to bed at night all worried that there was someone he could've done more for... he's that good.

the door openers/valet dudes -
these guys are also always happy... they open my door for me every single day. yes, they may do that for everybody that comes through, but they make you feel like it is a privilege to be the one to get the door for you. i smile back every time. hard not to.

register dude at little organic market/cafe -

way peppy and encouraged us to buy something because they are "just delectable"... and with a huge grin on says, "they are perfect for the fall season!" love. that.

waiters/waitresses -
you know you love the ones that are so comfortable and happy... not just so you will tip them well but the ones that really and truly love doing what they are doing... i had a guy the other day at zaytinya—this beautiful place that serves tapas (appetizer-sized entrees) only so you have to get about 3 a person (dang). i love the ones that are clever enough i can tell them to just pick for me... and they will know... he so did.

musicians -

i have been to a few concerts this year, slash, i have seen a few semi-famous-ers come to ellington and throw down. i love the ones that are loving what they do. i loved jason mraz and john mayer live for that reason-- they truly love that their job is to throw down...
it really makes me smile. slash want their job...

the fudge man -
this guy was at costco selling his own homemade fudge. i wasn't sure which kind to try and he looked at me a second and then said, "i know exactly what you need...you need a little excitement in your personal life... its in your eyes... the eyes are the window to your heart... here, let that live in between your lips... chocolate cheesecake... i've only been doing this for about 2 minutes... times 25 years or so..." i have to admit... it was a sensuous experience. good thing he loves his job... he read right through me and made my week!

proceed to purchased enjoyment.

i have been changed.... for. good.

finished the mammoth project. revising it is a roach in the refrigerator.
know its there but don't want to touch it.

instead, monday night i went to a fantabulous concert that, as cheesy at it sounds, i have been wanting to go to all year... possibly all my life. [dramatic head throw]

jason, baby, you rock my world. you is better live and loud and proud than most are in the studio! such an adorable geek in the pink that i was just giddy and 12 the entire time. the friend who took me to said concert was surely ready to puke at any given moment because of the plastered smile and girlish squeals that escaped every 4 minutes at the start of a new song...

the only moment that i shuddered was when he plastered huge pictures of Obama during one of his songs... not that it was Obama per say... well- here are the lyrics... you can decide how you feel about that.

Live High
Jason Mraz

I try to picture a girl
Through a looking glass
See her as a carbon atom
See her eyes and stare back at them
See that girl
As her own new world
Though a home is on the surface, she is still a universe

Glory God, oh God is peeking through the blinds
Are we all here standing naked
Taking guesses at the actual date and time
Oh my, justifying reasons why
Is an absolutely insane resolution to live by

Live high
Live mighty
Live righteously
Takin it easy
Live high, live mighty
Live righteously

[pictures go up somewhere in here...]

Try to picture the man
To always have an open hand

And see him as a giving tree

See him as matter

Matter fact he's not a beast

No not the devil either

Always a good deed doer

And it's laughter that we're making after all

The call of the wild is still an ordination why
And the order of the primates

All our politics are too late
Oh my, the congregation in my mind

Is this assembly singing of gratitude

Practicing their lovin for you

Live high
Live mighty
Live righteously
Takin it easy
Live high, live mighty
Oh live righteously

Take it all,
And just take it easy
And celebrate the malleable reality
You see nothing is ever as it seems
Yeah this life is but a dream

Lift me up to the almighty
Raise your hands and start acknowledging

Live high, live high
Live mighty, mighty, mighty,
Oh live righteously
Takin it easy
Live high, live mighty
Oh live righteously
Just take, just just taking it easy
Live high
Oh live mighty, mighty,
Oh live righteously
Take it all, just take it, take it easy
See live high,
Oh live righteously
Just take it easy

great song, but what was once close to spiritual has been tainted a bit for me.

its almost as sticky as watching this:

who filmed this and why does that feel awkward? maybe cause he pulls out some far-too-popish sound before he ends there...

k- so he's flawless. one of the most healthy sounding voices... and i think he should record some church stuff. that would be good for all i think. just don't sing like a pop star in church next time. that bugs.

anyway- awesome concert- i would recommend him to any.
worth every cent... unless you are married...

cause you might want to...er....not be...when he's done with you!!

alaskan windsong and GB

i know i know... get back to work!

i am.
and i really am almost done
with the project that will soon eat me alive.

but i found this which made me laugh...

tina fey as tina palin. priceless.
she really is a genius at what she does.

and then this one that made me cry...

again. i just love this kind of thing... and glenn beck

...so much so, that it keeps me from productive work.

oh- and something to look forward to:

...remember that i was going to be

megan marie mraz?

just wait till monday when i will meet my love in person!

yeah- that's right. live high. live mighty. live righteously.

life lessons from a random black man in adam's morgan...

today has been
a day of learning for this west coaster...

LA-— the other intern in the theatre dept., showed up this morning explaining how he (a larger in stature black man that i wouldn't mess with even with a million dollars in my pocket and a gun in my hand) almost got mugged... he was just walking by his house to get to the bus and these two 17-year-old kids circled him like they was going to get all up in his face and he just jumped on the one until he was sufficiently scared (while the other kid ran) and then he too joined his cowardly accomplice. i guess as he was walking away, he was telling his grandmother bout it on the phone when he watched some middle-aged woman get her purse snatched, right in front of 30 or so people, including a military officer who all just sat and watched the poor woman run after the guy in her heels....

that was my morning...

in the evening, i discovered the greatness that is "adam's morgan." it is the original harlem area where the black jazz babies got their start. i will be returning as soon as humanly possible.

as we first round the corner into the strip of fun places to check out we run into a guy that randomly says as we pass, "your dad said you are supposed to call him" to my date. ok... whatev. note to self: crazies are abundant—be. ware.

my eclectic date (everyone is using that word right now, btw, it is like my first semester at byu when everyone said "ambiguous" all the time...random.) took me to an area with a little band playing in the window, and before we went inside, i got an urban vernacular lesson from the random man sitting against the window to "feel the vibes." i do enjoy the occasional reggae vibe pulsating through my back...

as we sat there with him he explained that "people just don't respect the crown of david anymore. ya know what that is right? the crown of david? david's crown? dreadlocks."
it goes with the Rastafarian belief that the dreads represent power because of the Nazarites mentioned in the bible that wore them... Samson, Samuel, John the Baptist...etc. interesting.

we asked him if he had them (he had a hat on) and he said "no, because I just graduated college"
ah. I would hate to have dreads weighing down my college experience...
"you do know what college is, right?"
am i stupid? no... i did that for like 7 years, thanks...
"round here, we call 'college' prison"
cause you entered a new school of thought? or because it was four years of sleep..?

then he told us the place to be was across the way, cept it dun been shut down on account of the
"batties" took em over and they shut it down not two weeks ago...

me: ok. so what are "batties"
random black man: you know.
me: no, actually, i don't.
random black man: think about it honey...
me: still don't know actually...
random black man: like a girl batty... or a boy batty?
me: sorry?
random black man: like gays.
me: i'm so using that.

then we went inside the little reggae bar...
the band was yummy, playing mostly classic reggae that you would recognize, only they were better... and live. we got drinks and danced a bit. note: this is a small place- so like 20 people at best, and we were 2 of 4 white people.... one, who perhaps didn't see my male friend and therefore my sexual orientation because she invaded some serious personal space trying to make me "feel the music" with her. thank you date for saving me.
apparently this place also serves west african food, so i will be back to discover what that entails. can it be bad? i submit that it cannot.

then we met up with the rest of the group over at "tryst" more of a coffee/jazz/cafe/diner=type place... also very moderny with an old town feel and totally different atmosphere. also loved it.

glad to get a taste of the underworld of DC. i love love the embedded culture and heart of the place. so much to learn and so little time. we almost went salsa/latin dancing too... but alas—no shoes. next outing will perhaps give me the jitter bug release i am looking for...

another reason to love asians

event:
karoke & spa
"type" of asian: Koreans

my friends chose to break me into the east coast thing easy.
ok- lets be honest, they already had this planned and i happened to get in town on the perfect night to party.
but i digress...

what these new easterners called "krazy korean night" was a trip:

first
, we went to this korean restaurant. i will give you the short version of korean food as i see it:

• naughty
• spicy
• ricy
• somewhat rubbery (octopus... ew.)

good stuff though.... just exnay the swimming things and it is a perfect meal for me.

then, we went into a little room in the restaurant (no, i am not about to tell you this was a korean brothel or anything) where we sang karoke. it is awesome! the room goes krazy (ok, that is the last time i will spell crazy with a k...) with the lights every time a new song comes on. 1/2 of the people spoke korean and so they sang some korean songs (neckties on their heads and all), but there were a few english types in there too...

the white chicks and i wailed to a one certain "rainin men" and laughed the whole time. karoke = serious good times/workout for the abdominals. speaking of- who has the pictures from said event? i need— i need.

and then, we went to spa world.
here is where korea starts to look more awesome than its neighbors.

so, when you go to a korean spa, you first check in your shoes. i am told this is standard. they give you a little locker and an itty key and you put your shoes in there till you leave. i guess asians revere their footwear like we do our IDs... cause it seemed to be a collateral hold more than a welcome gesture. nonetheless...

then you get into these little outfits here. -->
like scrubs but not. and they all wear their towels in this Princess Leia style too... none of us could figure out how to do it... i guess we coulda asked but we didn't think it polite. then you enter one of these few sauna rooms and just chill there till you are sweating unbearably. the first one was only 135° or so and it took a while for this arizonan to sweat in there, but eventually we did and then we ventured through the rest. they all have a theme. there is a "rock" room, with little balls of rock. they are warm though so you just lay in em and it pretty much feels amazing until your air passageway is blocked by the steam that builds up in the chestal region.

koreans get their heat from their heated flooring. this is the floor that they will just put a mat on and sleep on (a very thin non-padded mat. hey- maybe this is why they don't have butts... hmm...). between sauna trips and bathing you can just chill here and eat (you buy food with your little key on your wrist) or watch olympics on a huge screen. side note: we were the only ones that really watched the olympics, maybe it isn't their thing. or maybe they are only into the asian male gymnasts- for which i would not blame them. Yang Wei* anyone?

this is the best part. the part that makes it authentically korean: the bathhouse.
in some of these spas in america, they will have a similar bathing room/pool/hot tub room, but you might be co-ed... or at least clothed. not at this one. at first, i was sort of terrified at the thought of baring all to at least a dozen other nude strangers, but it took watching my friend (who served in korea and has no fear of such a place) just rip off her clothes and walk in, for me to see it was no big deal. i dropped em and went in.

the bathhouse has a little area that you wash up in first before you get into the pools. you sit on a little plastic stool hoo-ha with a mirror in front of you (coulda done without the mirror, thanks) and there is a hand-held shower thinger and soap, wash cloth...etc. you just bathe! so after i "bathed" (or "splashed some water on myself for a few minutes") i went and found the hot tubs. no one was in them. one was "aloe" and it was green. and one was marked "rose" and it was pink. they were yummy and made your skin feel like butta. then there is a main pool which is basically like swimming in your bath water or like the 97° temperature of an outdoor swimming pool in the AZ. there were waterfalls and little places where you can sit that jet water into your flabby thighs, and even one that shoots water straight up so you can basically float there on top of the water pressure**.

there is a little area down in the corner where asians are getting greasy naked rub-downs, and you can pay extra for any of those normal spa-type services. they put it on your key along with any food you purchase and then you pay for it as you leave.

after the yummy wash down there are showers with shampoo/conditioner and things so you can re-wash off, and then you go get back into your scrubs and do it all over again. (only, we didn't.) we played some mexican train (how fitting, right?) and then we were going to sleep over, cause we could, but we didn't. they have segregated (men/women) rooms for sleeping that are like the open room with mats—only dark. my ride had to be up early so we just went home.

long story short,
asians = yum.
i will be returning to the spa shortly. i thank you.

* thanks- i know he's not korean. but go with me here.
** i call this the colon blow

a new love in my life...

it all happened so fast...

i am having a little crush on this guy here...
he comes with me in the car,
then goes straight into the computer at work,
then back in the car,
and the second my hand touches my computer he is back...
obsession?... borderline.

i put up a few of him in the playlist o lerv over there
so you can enjoy,
but really, just go buy it...
like now.

you will love "Lucky" featuring Colbie Caillat,
the one that rob decided needs an grammy this year: "Love for a Child", and
"I'm Yours" or "Live High" - that you will sing all day
and wish your boyfriend could play...
nuff said. so good. all of them.

this one i love...maybe its me...

"A Beautiful Mess"

You've got the best of both worlds
You're the kind of girl who can take down a man,
And lift him back up again

You are strong but you're needy,
Humble but you're greedy
Based on your body language,
your shouted cursive I've been reading

You're style is quite selective,
though your mind is rather reckless
Well I guess it just suggests
that this is just what happiness is

Hey, what a beautiful mess this is
It's like picking up trash in dresses

Well it kind of hurts when the kind of words you write
Kind of turn themselves into knives
And don't mind my nerve you can call it fiction'
Cause I like being submerged in your contradictions dear'
Cause here we are, here we are

Although you were biased I love your advice
Your comebacks they're quick
And probably have to do with your insecurities

There's no shame in being crazy,
Depending on how you take these
Words that paraphrasing this relationship we're staging

And it's a beautiful mess, yes it is
It's like, we are picking up trash in dresses

Well it kind of hurts when the kind of words you say
Kind of turn themselves into blades
And the kind and courteous is a life I've heard
But it's nice to say that we played in the dirt

Cause here, here we are, Here we are
Here we are

...he is God's gift to words

wanna hear a secret?

something that i love that is green:

my green ipod.

what am i listening to right now on that little device-o-lerv?

these guys.

why? oh cause maybe I am marking something off of my new year's goal list on Friday!!!

thank you meghan (former awesome roommate) for thinking of me while being a part of the fan club.
honestly, i think i have never been to a concert only because i always felt that i didn't know the group well enough to go and be with those that were... like i would be pretending to be one of the fans, when really i was a "yeah, i guess i kinda like em" fan. well i will admit—i happen to be a HUGE fan!!! i will let you know how this "first" goes.

the countdown is on...
